Currently in Boston — October 10, 2023: A chilly morning
Plus, smoky peatland fires erupt in Indonesia.
The weather, currently.
Chilly morning
It's going to be a chilly night ahead with temperatures in the 40s and they're pretty even be some readings in the '30s over Northern Franklin and Worcester counties. There's a frost advisory for Northern New England in spots.
Tuesday will be mostly sunny but there could be a pop-up shower in the afternoon. Not everybody will see one however. I can't rule out a heavier downpour in an isolated area. Sunshine returns for Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures all 3 days in the '60s. As we get towards Friday it looks like more clouds will start to increase. The weekend is a bit questionable with the chance for rain but it's too early to determine which of the two days will have the most activity and how much there will be.
What you need to know, currently.
Wildfires in Indonesia have already burned more land area than in all of 2022 combined, according to satellite imagery and local reports.
Indonesia often hosts massive forest fires during its dry season, which runs roughly from August to December. This year, with drought linked to El Niño, those fires have been much larger than normal — recalling some of the major fire seasons of 1997 and 2015, both intense El Niño years.
On average, tens of thousands of people die annually due to complications of smoke and air pollution due to fires in Indonesia — some of which can linger for months in slow-burning peatlands.
